Do you really need "New Year's resolutions" to set healthy fitness goals and stick to them?
January is the time of year when we make our New Year's resolutions. Often we start well only to give up again in February, or later in the year. Why is that?
As author and speaker Simon Sinek tells us, you should always remember your 'WHY', the reason behind your intention. For most of us, the reason behind the 'WHY' brings us a healthier and happier life. So losing weight, quitting smoking or exercising more will bring happiness and health.
So don't get caught up in daily stats that record your success, but remember why you decided to set those goals. Do you struggle throughout the year to stick to your New Year's resolutions? Follow our expert tips on how to set fitness goals and stick to them.
Tips for setting fitness goals
Take it easy at first: take a daily walk of half an hour and gradually build up to 10,000 steps a day.
Stay focused with a mantra
Creating a personal mantra will help you stay focused. Nostalgia or regret about the past and worry about the future can undermine your fitness goals. A three-word mantra such as "In the present and with awareness" will keep you on track.
Treat yourself every time you accomplish a small goal. Rewarding yourself with a movie, a nice meal or a new piece of clothing will keep you motivated.
Identify your personal obstacles
An example might be: you tried to quit smoking but gave up because you were hanging out with friends who smoked. If this sounds familiar, make a plan to avoid personal "hurdles" that stand in the way of your success.
Join forces with a friend
Running or exercising together is more fun and you can support each other when you get demotivated.
Plan your training schedule
Schedule the workouts at times that suit you best. It could be early before work, at lunch or in the evening. Writing them in your calendar or diary will make it easier to stick to your training schedule.
